Grace by Richard Paul Evans was the last I plan to read of his. It was just too much. I read for fun, not horror. You can kill off all of the adults you want in mystery novels and tv shows, but children and pets are off limits.

Dewey - The Library Cat by Vicki Myron

What a fantastic book! It's not only about a cat who lives in the library, but the woman who loved him and how the library environment has changed over the years. I experienced some of it when I worked at the Oshtemo Branch Library of the Kalamazoo Public Library for 7 years. This book met with my heart.

Faith-based Mystery

I thoroughly enjoy the faith-based mysteries by Lori Copeland. I've also read some of her other books, and I enjoy those as well. She always reminds me to relax and LIVE my faith.

Scrapbooking anyone?

I highly recommend these New Orleans located scrapbooking mysteries if you're into all variations of scrapbooking. I'm more into the sedate version of scrapbooking without 3-D items, so I don't follow the techniques so much. But I always enjoy a good mystery. I also enjoy her tea series. I see from her website, there is another series she write's as well.

Hello One and All,

I unintentionally took a break from reading. Between allergies and migraines, my eyes and ears weren't up for much. Now I'm back into the thick of it, and thoroughly enjoying many wonderful works. I recently finished reading If Grace is True by Philip Gulley and James Mulholland. I highly recommend this to everyone. I'm also continuing both the Joanne Fluke series about the Cookie Jar and Diane Mott Davidson's series about Goldy's Catering - both mysteries with recipes. I have taken up another series by Beverly Lewis - this one mostly taking place is Lancaster about the Beachy Amish - of which I was not aware of until this series. I'll have to research that, but it sounds like an Amish sect where they believe more modern views and more about Jesus Christ rather than the Ordnug. Then there's the book club with Manatron. I very much enjoyed this month's selection Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind by Ann B. Ross. I look forward to continuing the series.

Enjoying Julia

Last night I finished reading Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind by Ann B. Ross for the Manatron Book Club. I think the name of that group will be changing as now more of us than not no longer work there.

Any which way, I really enjoyed the book! Cheryl picked it out. It was fantastically fun and adventurous. Especially because the main character was in her late sixties and found out her recently deceased husband has a 10-year old child by another woman.

Just now, when I added the book to my list and then found the website, I found it's a whole series of books! Now, in addition to working my way through the Bubbles Yablonsky, Stephanie Plum, Goldy's Catering, and The Cookie Jar series, I'll also be working on Miss Julia.

Loss of Work and Depression

It's been a rough week. The company where I work (Configuration Solutions) has been bought by Consona. Some of us have limited time, some were let go Friday, and others have long-term agreements. I am limited with a 1 day to 3 month possibility, at least that's the offer I've been told will most likely be made when the new HR people come in Monday.

Wouldn't you know, Manatron let more people go this Wednesday, including my old boss whom I adore - they were not as nicely let go as the people here. My pen-pal's mom has uterine cancer, and cousin Rick (Bourner side) will be going into hospice this weekend.

And yet, I read the most wonderful book just this week that would help during a time of depression. Mosaic: Pieces of My Life So Far by Amy Grant. WOW! This is an autobiography of the pieces of Amy Grant's life. It's inspiring, joyous, sad, and filled with faith.

Also, interestingly enough, I have an appointment on Wednesday night with the career counselor at Davenport to find out about how to write for magazines.

Dear Lord, please help me to be faithful in full to You. Help me to seek You during both difficult and happy times. Amen.

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

Actually, I'm only 1/3rd through The Fountainhead, but I wanted to put it here to remind me to finish listening to it. So far, I'm not all that into it. Probably because I've been reading murder mysteries that go at a much faster pace. Considering the audio of it is 32 hours, I'll probably finish the rest in two different check outs.

Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver

Not such a good read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Poisonwood Bible by her ... twice. But this is too much of a repeat on the same themes. I was quite disappointed, especially since it's the Kalamazoo Public Library's reading together book for the year.

Hot Flash and Other Books

Hello! I know, Hot Flash is supposed to be about menopause, but I enjoy it because it's about a group of friends. I read their Holiday book a year or two ago at Christmas and have been meaning to read more of the series.

As for books about groups of friends, that is why I also enjoyed Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons, the Yada Yada Prayer Group series, and the Sister Chicks series.

A note about another author: Alice Sebold. I very much enjoyed The Lovely Bones, but I recently read Almost Moon. I so did not like Almost Moon. It was no where near the same high quality as The Lovely Bones and it was 100% depressing - no hope like The Lovely Bones. I believe there's another book out there by Alice Sebold. I hope that is a good read.

A similar feeling was for Sue Monk Kidd and her first two fiction books. I thoroughly enjoyed The Secret Life of Bees (one of my all time favorites), but could not appreciate The Mermaid Chair. I would have liked The Mermaid Chair if she had left out the affair.

Bible

There is one book I'm reading that I haven't listed in the Books section on the right. It is the Bible. I am using a Bible In A Year book for the NIV.

Over the years, I've tried to read the Bible many times. First starting at Genesis, and I only ever read the first 5 books of the Bible. Then I tried starting in the New Testament - that didn't go well either. A few years ago, Way FM had a "Bible in a Year" program. I tried that too, but it was a lot of flipping back and forth daily - I didn't make it through January.

Finally, while I was shelving one morning at Barnes and Noble, I ran across several Bible In A Year books. They come in several different versions. I prefer NIV, and I'm succeding! I started July 1, 2007 and I've remained current through today. I am excited that I will have the Bible read by the end of June.

Exciting Reading

I recently completed Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson (see link in book section). Previously I've read Robert Kurson's book Crashing Through. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these books. Because of Shadow Divers, I now am seeking to read more about deep sea diving and searching the web for podcasts by the two main characters.

Robert Kurson has a incredible gift for writing other people's stories as if you're there experiencing it with them. Both of these books would be enjoyed by men and women. I am in awe of Robert Kurson's writing talent as well as the heros he writes about.
